MY TOYHi All:

I have been through quite a few post about hard starting when the car is warm. Mine is starting to do the same thing. Starts fine when cold, hard to start when warm.
Has anyone actually found the cause of this and what was done to repair it. Just got a call from another prowler owner who had the same problem and dealer is telling him it is the fuel pump. My car warranty expired last month so forget that. Has anyone replaced there own fuel pump and what was the cost. Can't belive only 8000miles and the fuel pump is shot.

butchceeare you handy with tools? I've had my pump out a couple of times. last time was to get it sealed right and the time before was for a replacement of the actual pump inside the module for a higher volume one. Do a search with "fuel pump" as the subject and you'll find lots of info. Dan Pena has the replacement in pictures on his site. http://www.prowlerexcitement.com/
If you need to borrow the tool necessary to remove the tank nut, I'll send it to you to borrow. If you have any doubts, let he dealer do it.
dpenaThank Al ..aka.. butchcee for the R&D.

LAter..

dpenaHey Al,

I found I run out of fuel when my fuel gauge is at 1/4. I usually do not let it get that far before refueling but this one time I did. To my surprise my engine started to turn off. Luckily it did it 500 feet away from a gas station.

I think I did not seat the fuel pump all the way. Could I borrow or tell me the fee to use your tool once more??

I think I need to seat it properly into the blue rubber in this picture. I think it is not reading the remaining fuel or sucking the remaining fuel since it is not seated properly.

Thank you Al!!

butchceePM the address again Dan--I'll get it right out.
dpenaAl,

You got a PM...

MY TOYButchcee/Dpena:

Thank's for all the info. It just started acting up and going to see if it gets any worse before changing it. As to if I can do it myself don't think it will be to much of a problem. Just changed my daughters fuel pump on her Saturn this summer was even certified in quite a few areas of car repairs years ago. Question about the pump, Are you sure this it the right one. If you are running out of gas at 1/4 tank is the pump length the same as the old one and are you sure you didn't bend the float arm when reinstalling it. Replacing it I can do but what really pisses my off it that it would fail with only 8,000 miles on it.

dpenaMY TOY,

The fuel pump works great. I was having starting problems when it would warm up. Once I put in the new fuel pump which is this one, my Prowler has been working great.

I did not know at the time when I installed the fuel pump that it was important to seat the bottom of the fuel pump snuggly. I remember just gently putting in without concern to snugg it in.

After some technical discussions with some friends, I know this is my issue.

Later..

Black Tie 161The pump comes out easily thru the trunk and like Dan said, just make sure the float pad sits flat on the tank.

You might want to get a new O-ring seal as they have been redesign to prevent leaking...(mine did....that is why I am so familiar with the fuel pump)

Be sure to depressurize the fuel system first...much less messy...very easy to do just unplug the fuel pump fuse and try to start the car for a second to run the pressure out.

If you can't break the O-ring seal on the pump cover screw, a few taps with a hammer on a screwdriver pointed at the vanes on the pump cover will start it.

butchceeHard to believe that the pump isn't seated Dan. I would think that the canister wouldn't close unless it was. If you wanted to spent the time, you could always bend the float arm until it read correctly, but that would take some time to get it right. I tried the hammer method on the tank ring and with a stubborn cap, wanged up the fins. I'll be glad to lend the tool to do the job correctly--plus it will give a good feel for tightening the cap back up. Don't know if I read it here or on another site, but some fuel pump information is that running with the tank low constantly causes the pump to run hot as uses the fuel around it to draw heat from the pump body.
butchceealso, I used the factory fuse pull method to depressurize the fuel line and the rag around the fittings method. The rag method is very simple and effective and works just fine. JMO
MY TOYOK Guys,

Thank's for all the info. Your telling me that there is something on this car that is easy to get to. I can't belive it. I was hoping I didn't have to pull the tank. It just started acting up so I'll let it go a while and see if it gets any worse. I have a couple more questions. You said it is the same pump as a Neon. Does it put out the same pressure and volume or would I be better off putting in a high volume pump.

butchceehere's some more info to clear up your questions. http://www.prowleronline.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/001794.html
MY TOYOK guys,

Looks like I will be replacing the pump sooner than I thought. Just got back from a little cruise. Stopped to fill up the tank and took 3-4 times of cranking it over to start. Going on the Pumpkin Run next week so won't be able to get to it until first week of October. Butchcee If it is possible I would like to use your cap removal tool. I'll pm you my address and let me know when it is available.

butchceeDan, MYTOY--YGM
